Muskies In Skootamatta Lake?

September 17, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Burt Fielding has been on the lake for 18 years, and during the summer he found some minnows that he thought looked like muskellunge swimming around the beach at Bible Island. He has never seen one in the lake before and has never heard of anyone catching one.

Can anyone confirm that this is a muskie minnow, or whether anyone has caught a muskie in Skootamatta Lake?

The colouring and lateral stripes are more in line with a pike fingerling. Muskie tend to have more dots on their side.

What you have to consider here is what species are prolific in the lake as well. At that size, both species and grass pickerel for that matter look very similar. However, as with the adults, the muskies dorsal, tail and anal fin will all be pointed... if it is round then you are looking at a Pike, or if it is more squared off at the dorsal and anal fin, most likely a pickerel. Considering how prolific pickerel are in Skoot, that might be the most likely answer.

I managed to catch a 13" Muskie in my minnow trap up on the Northern end (Jacques Bay) .. needless to say, it had a large belly and no other fish in the trap.
